There are usually a number of agents in any given area, make sure to interview a few in your neighborhood. Compare their fees & commission structures, services including marketing strategy, and personality. Yes, personality, you are likely going to be working with this professional for a few months, at least, so it’s important that you ‘gel.’ Not that they need to be your best friend but, you should trust their opinion. Remember that commissions are negotiable. On top of their commission, is there a marketing fee? A brokerage fee? Consider what they are offering the other agent that will possibly bring a buyer – is it competitive? Don’t get taken advantage of but keep in mind that old saying: ‘you get what you pay for.’ Are they offering you full service or limited ‘set-it-and-forget-it’ service? Do they have a [good] marketing strategy? Good marketing = eyeballs = competition = getting the best possible offer. If the agent doesn’t have a strategy, you are less likely to get the best deal.
Bottom line, even in today’s hot real estate market – DO YOUR RESEARCH. You’re hiring someone to help you sell, what is most likely your largest asset, your home.
